A gift for…
Most gifts end up in a drawer. This one — it's up there every clear night, for the rest of their life.
Naming a star for someone no longer here? You're in the right place — see how to name a star after someone who died.
What makes it real
A real star — from the Hipparcos/Tycho-2 astronomical catalogues, with coordinates that will point a telescope straight at it in a hundred years.
Really recorded — a unique registry number, publicly checkable on this site at any time.
Honestly explained — the naming is symbolic, and we say so before you buy. How it works — knowing makes the gift better, not smaller.
Star naming — your questions answered
Is this an official star name?
No — and no company can truthfully sell you one. Only the International Astronomical Union assigns official star designations, and it doesn't sell naming rights. Your star's name is recorded in our own register: symbolic, unique to you, and honestly described. We think that's worth more than a false promise.
Is the star real? Can I see it?
It's real — usually you'll need binoculars or a telescope to see it. Every star we dedicate is a real, catalogued star from the Hipparcos and Tycho catalogues, with genuine coordinates printed on your documents. Your coordinates sheet includes a chart of the surrounding sky, and your star page shows it among its constellation. Like the stars from any star naming company, they are fainter than the naked eye can see; the brightest few percent can be found with binoculars from a dark site and most need a small telescope. The honest numbers.
How is my star chosen?
You choose the constellation (or let us surprise you). We then allocate a real star from our curated pool for that constellation — each one catalogued, charted, and never previously dedicated. Each star in our register can only be named once.
When will the gift arrive?
Digital Gift Pack: within minutes. Physical and Twin Star packs are printed and posted within 24 hours. Your star is allocated automatically when payment is confirmed, and your confirmation email links to the star page, certificate, and coordinates sheet — ready to print or send straight away. Ordering at 11pm the night before a birthday is, we understand, traditional.
Can you buy a star in the UK?
Not the star itself: nobody owns the stars, and only the International Astronomical Union assigns official names. What you can buy is a named dedication of a real, catalogued star, recorded in our register with a certificate and a star page. It costs £9.99 for the Digital Gift Pack, £19.99 for the Physical Gift Pack, posted free in the UK, or £29.99 for the Twin Star Gift Pack: two neighbouring stars named together.
Do you post outside the UK?
Yes. The digital gift is instant anywhere in the world. The Physical Gift Pack is posted free within the UK, £8.99 to the EU and £14.99 everywhere else, by Royal Mail International. Overseas packs usually arrive within 5–10 working days.
What if I make a mistake, or change my mind?
Digital star? Tell us and we'll correct or change the name at no charge. On a printed pack, a name typed wrongly isn't reprinted free, so please check the spelling before you order. Changed your mind? Tell us within 14 working days of your order for a full refund — printed packs come back to us at your cost. No forms, no fuss.
Can someone else already have my star?
No. Each star in our register can only be named once. Your registry number is yours alone, and anyone can verify the entry on our site, any time.
