1. Who we are
The Star Naming Co. (thestarnamingco.co.uk) is a trading name of Crowther Creative Products Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 04994959). Registered office: 6 Downlands, Harrietsham, Maidstone, Kent, ME17 1LE, United Kingdom. VAT registration no. GB 833 9667 87. Contact: our contact form or info@thestarnamingco.co.uk.
2. What you are buying — the honest bit
Our service is a symbolic gift. When you name a star with us, we record your chosen name against a real, catalogued star in The Star Naming Co. Register, our own privately maintained register. Each star in our register can only be named once.
No private star-naming register — ours included — is recognised by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the scientific body responsible for official astronomical designations. No company can sell an "official" star name, and we make no such claim. What we promise is real: a real star from the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 catalogues, identified by its genuine coordinates, uniquely dedicated within our register, and beautifully documented.
3. The products
The Digital Gift Pack includes: a unique registry number; an entry in our register; a personalised online star page showing your star's position in the sky; and five printable A4 documents (name certificate, welcome letter, coordinates sheet with sky chart, the story of your constellation, and an extract from the register). You can reprint at home, free, for life, via your star page.
The Physical Gift Pack includes everything in the Digital Gift Pack, plus five personalised documents printed on fine cream stock and posted to the address of your choice: name certificate, welcome letter, coordinates sheet with sky chart, the story of your constellation, and an extract from the register. UK delivery is free. Delivery to the EU is £8.99 and to the rest of the world £14.99, by Royal Mail International. The Physical Gift Pack is posted flat in an A4 envelope.
The Twin Star Gift Pack names two neighbouring stars in the same constellation together. It includes, for each star, a unique registry number, an entry in our register and a personalised online star page, plus seven personalised documents printed on fine cream stock and posted together in one pack to the address of your choice: one landscape certificate naming both stars, a welcome letter, a coordinates sheet and an extract from the register for each star, and the story of the constellation. Delivery charges are the same as for the Physical Gift Pack.
Name a Star for Lovers, when available, is a two-star pack on the same terms as the Twin Star Gift Pack: two neighbouring stars, seven printed documents, the same price and the same delivery charges. Until it is on sale it cannot be ordered.
Prices are shown in pounds sterling and include VAT. Multiple stars can be ordered together, up to ten in one order, each at its own price.
4. Delivery
Digital content is delivered automatically. Your star is allocated when payment is confirmed and your order confirmation email, which links to your star page and documents, arrives within minutes.
Physical Gift Packs and Twin Star Gift Packs are printed and dispatched within 24 hours by Royal Mail, to the delivery address given at checkout. UK packs are sent by Royal Mail Tracked 48, and from 1 December 2026 by Royal Mail Tracked 24. Any other delivery option offered at checkout is shown with its price before you pay. Christmas order-by dates on our site follow Royal Mail's recommended last posting dates; Royal Mail does not guarantee these services. International packs usually arrive within 5–10 working days and may be subject to local postal checks. If a pack arrives damaged, or does not arrive, contact us and we will reprint and re-send it at no charge.
5. Cancellation and refunds
By placing an order you consent to immediate supply of the digital content, and you acknowledge that you lose the statutory 14-day right to cancel once the content has been supplied (your star allocated and documents made available). As our cart puts it: by continuing you agree to immediate delivery of your digital star gift and acknowledge this waives the 14-day cancellation right — our own refund promise below applies instead.
The printed documents in a Physical Gift Pack or a Twin Star Gift Pack are personalised to your dedication and made to your order, so the statutory cancellation right for goods does not apply to them once production has begun (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, reg. 28(1)(b)). This does not limit your rights in respect of faulty or misdescribed goods — or our own refund promise below, which applies to every order, printed or digital.
Our refund promise. If you are unhappy with your star for any reason, tell us within 14 working days of your order and we will refund you in full. If you bought a printed pack, please send it back to us; return postage is at your cost. When we refund an order, its star is cancelled off our register.
Damaged or faulty? Should a pack arrive damaged or faulty, we will send you a new one straight away, or refund you if you would rather.
Correcting or changing a name. On a Digital Gift Pack we are happy to correct or change the name at no charge — just ask. A printed pack is made to the name you give us, so a name typed wrongly is not reprinted free; please check the spelling before you order.
The refund covers the price you paid, including any UK postage; for packs posted outside the UK the international postage charge (£8.99 to the EU, £14.99 to the rest of the world) is not refunded once the pack has been sent, unless the pack was faulty, damaged or did not arrive. Refunds go back to your original payment method. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights, including under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
6. Offers
10% off your first star. If you join our mailing list we show you a code for 10% off your first order straight away, on screen. The code is entered at checkout on our own website. You can unsubscribe at any time.
Show us your star. If you send us a photo of your certificate with the person it was given to and we choose to show it on our website, we will email you a code for one free Digital Gift Pack, redeemed at thestarnamingco.co.uk/redeem. One free star per order. By sending a photo you agree that we may show it on our website and social media with first names only; please only send a photo of children if you are their parent or guardian; we choose which photos to use, and we will take a photo down whenever you ask. 7. Your dedication
You are responsible for the star name and message you submit. We may decline or remove dedications that are offensive, unlawful, or infringe another person's rights, and will offer a replacement or refund if we do.
8. The register
We maintain the register on secure cloud infrastructure and intend to keep it running indefinitely. If we ever cease trading, we will make reasonable efforts to publish a final archive of the register so that dedications remain verifiable.
9. Liability
Our total liability for any order is limited to the price paid for that order. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
10. General
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in force. Payments are processed by Shopify; your purchase is also subject to any terms presented at checkout.
